What are the most beautiful buildings in the world?

For centuries, architects have been designing extraordinary buildings that are not only functional, but also capture the imagination. Buildings, like paintings and sculptures, are works of art. In this one, we discover the world’s most beautiful buildings in the eyes of the people who know most about them: architects.

Innovation, Science & Technology Building

The world-famous Innovation, Science and Technology Building is the main building of the Florida Poly campus. The building was designed by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The white building is a movable and functional work of art. It has a Louvre system that can move with the sun, and it provides passive light in the second-floor atrium. The IST building is surrounded by metal arches that shade the outdoor terrace and walkways. The building covers an area of 162,000 sq ft and houses 26 classrooms, the auditorium Aula Magna, administrative offices and a common area of 11,000 sq ft. Construction of the building took a total of 28 months and was opened on 16 August 2014.

Empire State Building New York

The Empire State Building is one of New York’s tourist attractions. In 1929, land prices rise in New York, making everyone want to live in Manhattan. This high demand for housing starts the competition to build the tallest skyscraper, with businessmen competing for the tallest buildings in the world. Construction of the Empire State Building begins on 17 March 1930, led by architects Shreve, Lamb and Harmon Associates and brewers Starrett Bros. In a record time of 1 year and 45 days, construction of the building is completed, and it ranks as the tallest building in the world at the time. The 381-storey building ranks as the eighth wonder of the world.

Casa Milà

Casa Milà is a modern building located in Barcelona and designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. It was commissioned by Pera Milà and his wife Roser Segimon i Artells between 1906 and 1912 and was intended to be their family home. The couple lived in the building until their death and since then it has been open to the public as a museum and cultural centre. Now it is one of the city’s most visited tourist attractions. The architecture is known for its undulating stone facade, which is decorated with a series of intricate stone carvings and the distinctive arched windows.

Each building has its own story and its architecture makes a statement. The architect takes into account the ambitions of the client and trends of our time. In recent years, buildings have become increasingly modern and luxurious, thanks to the developments of our time. These advances offer new possibilities, such as creating illusions through floating houses, as seen in STATE’s exhibition houses.
